The Brief

I was tasked with redesigning the GRRC email newsletter for Goodwood, which is a membership service for classic car enthusiasts. The original design was quite plain and lacked strong branding, so the goal was to elevate the aesthetic, giving it a more sophisticated and luxurious feel. The idea was to take inspiration from Goodwood’s print newsletters, which had an old-fashioned, newspaper-style design, and adapt this for email. The challenge was to bring that heritage feel into the digital space while maintaining usability and clarity for email readers.

The Process

To begin the redesign, I pulled key elements from the print version of the newsletter, including typography, letterheads, line dividers, and the signature Art Deco-inspired lines at the top. I aimed to create a digital design that felt nostalgic and timeless, reminiscent of the 1930s or 1940s, while still being modern and functional for an email format. I incorporated a green, embossed style to reflect the luxury and heritage associated with Goodwood, and adjusted the layout to ensure it was both visually striking and easy to navigate on various devices. It was important to ensure the design felt like an extension of the classic, high-end identity of the GRRC.

The Result

The redesigned newsletter received a great response from both the Goodwood team and the GRRC members. The email now felt much more in line with the branding of Goodwood’s other print materials, which gave it a cohesive and premium look. The typography and heritage elements helped convey the luxury and history of the GRRC, aligning with the interests of the audience who are passionate about classic cars. The new design improved the overall user experience, making the newsletter feel more engaging and visually appealing, which, in turn, likely increased open and click-through rates.

The Reflection

Looking back, I’m really proud of how the design turned out. I think I managed to balance the old-fashioned, luxury aesthetic with the functionality required for an email format. The use of typography and heritage-inspired elements helped give the newsletter a sense of timelessness, which felt authentic to the GRRC’s brand. If I had the chance to refine it further, I would perhaps explore ways to make the images within the newsletter stand out a bit more and increase the contrast for improved legibility. But overall, it was a project that allowed me to creatively merge print and digital design, and I feel it really elevated the email experience for the GRRC members.
